Office #8, Thursday

There was no genuine reason why Obi-Wan should remain here: the earlier he departed, the less of a chance he would offer the island to drag him back in. But he had lingered for a while, and now it was Thursday, two days from Saturday, and Anakin had been on the island at least once in that time.

... He might as well stick around for a few days longer.

He rifled through what few things he had in this office. In all honesty he was here because it was quieter here than in the woods during the days the school was out of session. He'd already meditated peacefully for an hour. He'd put all of his effects back into some semblance of order. He'd...

...he was getting bored.

Maybe rearranging this stack of flimsi would help?

Probably not.

Anakin was in his office searching for a hard copy of Christopher's preschool application (why did they have to apply for preschool? WHY. The kid was small and excelled at eating pudding and dumping Legos on the floor. He wasn't exactly Georgetown material yet.) when he heard noise from Obi-wan's office.

"Hello, Master," he said with a small smile, poking his head into the open doorway.

Obi-Wan looked up from his insanely well-arranged stack of flimsi. "Anakin," he said. "Good morning."

He totally wasn't happy to see you, Anakin. Really. He was doing the grumpy face!

"That's an insanely well-arranged stack of flimsi," Anakin noted.

"Some of us like to have our affairs in order," Obi-Wan said.

Or had way too much time on their hands. "Are you back for the semester, or simply visiting?"

"I'm back for next semester," Anakin said. "All of the politicians are starting to circle closer to Washington again, so Rory will be back."

"How is she?" Obi-Wan asked. "And the little ones?"

[sith_happened]

"She's glad to be home," Anakin said with a smile. "She spent the last few months in a bus following around politicians and wishing they'd make more sense. Juliet started school this week, Chris goes next."

"You'll have some peace and quiet at home, then," Obi-Wan said. He smiled wryly. "Just in time for a new batch of students to arrive to vex you, instead."

Or, you know, vex them.

Anakin smiled again. "Well, it's why I'm here. To be vexed."

"You seem awfully accepting of it," Obi-Wan said. "Are you by any chance growing mellow with the advancing years, Anakin?"

He was smiling a bit, too.

"Never," Anakin said, leaning in the doorjamb. "I'm just as sharp as always. Just...not so surprised by the island's terrible sense of humor."

There was a long pause.

"You have been listening to the broadcasts, haven't you."

[sith_happened]

Anakin grinned. "Maybe a few."

[saddeserthermit]

"I don't want to hear a word about it," Obi-Wan said. "You are not as clever as you think you are."

[sith_happened]

"Sure I am," Anakin said, smirking.

[saddeserthermit]

"And smugness is never flattering," Obi-Wan added, for probably the five-hundredth time in his life.

Anakin laughed. "Have I ever listened to that?"

Nope. Not once in those five hundred times.

[saddeserthermit]

"And yet I remain hopeful," Obi-Wan said, "that one day you will become an adult being."

[sith_happened]

"I'm an adult!" Anakin said. "I'm just not terribly good at it."

[saddeserthermit]

"That is a certain point of view," Obi-Wan said dryly. "In any event, I do not want to discuss this past semester, Anakin."

Beat.

"Ever."

Anakin laughed. "It was that bad?"

[saddeserthermit]

"I hadn't even planned to teach another class," Obi-Wan muttered.

[sith_happened]

Anakin resisted the urge to reach out and ruffle Obi-Wan's hair fondly. "I'm glad you stuck around, though," he said.

"The island hardly left me much choice," Obi-Wan said. "I was on Tatooine with the eopies when I suddenly found myself back in a classroom."

"How's Luke?" Anakin asked softly.
